Photographic spots in San Francisco

Photographic spots in San Francisco

San Francisco is a picturesque city, sometimes bizarre, sometimes classic, where you will find a thousand photographic cues, for lovers of authentic photography, for street photographers, and for instagram-addicted.

HAIGHT-ASHBURY

This neighborhood offers exceptional photo opportunities. The brightly coloured Victorian wooden houses are the perfect backdrop not only for strolling, but for atmospheric photographs too.

HAYES VALLEY & PAINTED LADIES

Next to Alamo Square you'll find the most characteristic view of San Francisco, with the famous Painted Ladies, the beautiful Victorian terraced houses that stand out on the hill in contrast to the skyscrapers of the financial district in the background. It's best to pop in at sunset, when they're well lit, even if the park fills up with people.

MISSION DISTRICT & THE STREET ART

The neighborhood born around the Spanish missions, is a mix of cultures and people always animated, and among the ethnic food stores, tattoo parlors, alternative boutiques, you will find a sequence of beautiful murals in the streets around Clarion Alley.

CASTRO

The cradle of gay culture in San Francisco, it's a neighborhood overflowing with people and bizarre shops and bars, among decadent theaters. You may not take great panoramic pictures, but it's a playground for street photography lovers.

BAKER BEACH & THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

The quintessential spot to watch the sunset and the imposing red bridge symbol of San Francisco. The beach, the sea rippled by the wind, and the entire span of the bridge in the background will offer exceptional photographic cues.

THE TRAMS OF SAN FRANCISCO

Capturing the famous vintage trams rattling up and down the steep streets of San Francisco in a beautiful photo is almost a feat. They suddenly come out of the ridge, and you can barely catch your camera in time. Two good spots to wait and shoot are Huntington Park, where the trams arrive climbing California Street with the Oakland Bay Bridge in the background, or Hyde Street, where the trams come from Fishermans Wharf and stand out on the hill with Alcatraz Island in the background.

LOMBARD STREET

Is Lombard street nice to photograph? Yes, but from a distance. Don't get caught up in the crowds crossing Lombard Street in the Russian Hills section, because it's not so much crossing it that you'll see its characteristic zigzag. Instead, continue down Lombard St., towards the valley, and then up the other side. Get a good zoom, and you'll get the iconic photo.

MR HOLMES

In Hayes Valley, Alamo Square, Nob Hill, there are plenty of trendy clubs offering fun photo opportunities. I found this wall at Mr. Holmes Bakehouse lovely, where we had breakfast and stole a few shots.
