Autumn in Slovenia on the Road
We could not have chosen a better destination for an autumn road trip. Slovenia in October offered us fabulous seasonal vistas: with its rich forests cloaked in the colors of autumn, driving along its roads studded with yellowed leaves and flanked by reddened trees, stopping for a few hikes among the larch-covered mountains, was truly the best way to enjoy the fall season in Slovenia.
For the best fall hikes you can turn to this article.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for routes that will let you savor autumn from your car window or by making a short stop, here are the best ones we have selected.
BLED LAKE
Undoubtedly a perfect place for autumn, framed with colorful trees dotting the shores and hilly forests all around. A simple walk around the lake will be enough to enjoy the colors of autumn. Even better if you will be able to admire it with the morning mist that envelops it when the first cold weather arrives.
JASNA LAKE
Another perfect lake during foliage is Jezero Jasna, on whose crystal clear blue waters the surrounding mountains are reflected. The lake itself is a lovely and pleasant place to admire, but when all around it the needles of the larches and the iridescent birches begin to turn yellow, it becomes even more picturesque.
FROM JEZERO JASNA TO KOBARID VIA THE VRŠIČ PASS
From Lake Jasna, take the road to the Vršič Pass and from there travel along the Soča River bed to Kobarid. Amid yellowing trees, and the deep turquoise-colored river, you will enjoy a beautiful autumn panorama of sharp peaks, river rapids, and mountain villages.
AMONG THE VINEYARDS NORTH OF MARIBOR
From Ptuj to Gradiška, passing through Maribor, you'll cross hills cloaked in vineyards and dotted with small villages and a few wineries. Grab a bag of chestnuts and stop to enjoy the sunset over the vineyards.
BRDA HILLS
Although the villages of this vineyards area have not left us admiring, the roads connecting them offer beautiful views of the fields and nice sunsets. In October the autumn colors had not yet hit the vineyards, but later in the season, they certainly offer colorful and striking views.
LOGARSKA DOLINA
This valley is a perfect vantage point for autumn. Whether you travel it by car or on foot, or treat yourself to a little luxury at the Plesnik Lodge observing the valley while soaking in the steam of the outdoor hot tub, you won't regret the journey. Green horse-beaten meadows shrouded in morning mist, multicolored hills with deciduous trees soon turning yellow, red, brown, bare rocky peaks framing the valley. One of our favorite places for foliage.
