11 unmissable stops along Route 66
There are plenty of attractions along Route 66, actually too many of them. In the travelogues and guides you'll find too many curiosities to go and see: it might depend on personal taste, but myths like the Gemini Giant and the Cadillac Ranch, for example, in our opinion can be bypassed without regret.
If you have to condense your On the Road trip on the mother road in a couple of weeks, I suggest you to select your stops from this list that contains the most beautiful attractions we have encountered along the way.
1. PONTIAC
Stop for a photo in front of this fabulous mural of Route 66, which even more than the humble signal that marks the start, on an anonymous Chicago street, can be considered your starting flag.
2. BOB'S GASOLINE ALLEY, CUBA
A collection of vintage signs and gas station plates, as well as old petrol pumps, like an open-air museum.
3. 66 DRIVE-IN THEATRE, CARTHAGE
If you manage to stop by during the screening of some vintage movies, don't miss the chance to visit this drive-in.
4. COMMERCE
In addition to the famous Conoco station, in Commerce you will find diners and shops that have never left the 50s.
5. GLANCY MOTOR HOTEL, CLINTON
This motel is still in business, but is in a state of decay that perfectly suits the nostalgic Route 66.
6. ROUTE 66 MUSEUM, OKLAHOMA
Only for real enthusiasts, who are not satisfied with the open-air collection offered by Route 66.
7. THE BIG TEXAN RANCH, AMARILLO
Dine at this Texan restaurant, and maybe even stay at its motel. Perhaps you will have the opportunity to watch one of the famous competitions that reward the brave who are able to eat a 2 kg steak.
8. ROUTE 66 TO GLENRIO
This stretch, partially unpaved, of Route 66 dies shortly after the ghost town of Glenrio, but it deserves to be crossed.
9. TUCUMCARI
It is no more than a row of activities alongside Route 66, but Tucumcari is a small village that condenses the most picturesque attractions that the mother road has to offer. Bizarre hotels in the shape of tepees, diners full of curious characters, luminous signs falling apart.
10. OATMAN
An unmissable stop that will take you back in time, like in a Western movie. Among old saloons, donkeys wandering free in the street, the remains of some mines and saddles ready for a ride.
11. HISTORIC ROUTE 66 MOTEL, SELIGMAN
A few flickering neon signs is what it takes to add even more atmosphere to Route 66.
