The most beautiful beaches on Milos
The beaches on Milos are among the most beautiful we have found on the many Greek islands we have visited, and everyone will have ample choice to meet his or her tastes, from remote and deserted beaches to those awash in the music of beach bars, from fine sands to moon rocks. The most important factor in choosing a beach is orientation since Milos is an island constantly lashed by strong winds, and some north-facing beaches are often impassable.
PLATHIENA
equipped beach | free with shade / fine | coarse sand | large pebbles / beach bar and tavern
Located north of the island, this beach has the advantage of facing west and being protected from strong winds. The beach itself is not particularly beautiful, with somewhat narrow spaces, somewhat steep terrain, and the shoreline in front of the free beach very deep and full of stones. However, the seabed rises and becomes fine sand a few meters from the beach, and the water is a surreal emerald color. The high rock walls of the inlet create a beautiful setting for these Caribbean waters.
SARAKINIKO
free beach / fine sand | smooth rocks
Sarakiniko Beach is a tiny emerald cove with calm waters that contrasts with the deep, constantly stormy sea. No one goes to Sarakiniko for swimming, but if you drop in on this lunar paradise, you can spend a few hours lying in the sun on the smooth snow-colored rocks. Swimming further offshore is impossible as the sea is very deep and very rough.
POLLONIA
equipped beach | free with shade / fine sand / beach bar / taverns and convenience stores nearby
Pollonia is a village located in the northeast that has two small, very pleasant, low-wind beaches. The one along the edge of the center, dotted with restaurants and taverns, has convenient parking, a long strip of sand shaded by tamarisk trees, and fine sand. The second beach, with the same name, is on the west-facing side of the headland, and by contrast is a jagged coastal tongue of low cliffs. It is not a convenient coastal area for bathing but is very scenic and above all really quiet.
THIORICHIA
free beach / coarse sand / not accessible by car
This beach is special because of the presence of a large industrial mining archaeological site. The road to get there is very long, unpaved, and most importantly you cannot continue beyond a certain point to preserve the delicacy of the landscape consisting of sulfur rocks. So at some point you will have to park and continue on foot. The beach is practically deserted and the waters are rich in sulfur, which gives it a dull green color.
PALEOCHORI
equipped beach | free / fine sand / beach bars / taverns nearby
Paleochori is a beach with many facets: it has beautiful little stores on the beach, a very elegant restaurant that uses the beach's volcanic springs for cooking, some excellent, more spartan taverns, a fashionable bar with music and umbrellas on the beach, and plenty of space for water sports.
It is an endless expanse of fine sand, fairly deep water, a rocky backdrop of many shades of red.
TSIGRADO
free beach / coarse sand / difficult to access
This alcove is hidden among the rocky folds of the coast. You park on the cliff and descend between the rocks by wooden ladders. The beach is small and alternates with coves carved by the sea into the rock.
FIRIPLAKA
equipped beach | free / fine sand | large pebbles / beach bar
This beach is wonderful, wide and colored a thousand shades from yellow to red from the steep cliffs that surround it. The beach begins with a tongue of very fine sand, continues with an area of coarser sand, and then is dotted with rocks and large rainbow pebbles. In addition to the beautiful expanse of rocks, the stacks in the middle of the sea, the turquoise, crystal-clear waters are a bathing delight. It is also worth a very long walk to the end of the beach, where there is a small, almost inaccessible tavern.
The beach is now too famous, and the steep, dirt, sandy road that comes within a few meters of it fills up with cars and ATVs in every smallest remnant by mid-day. In addition, the high rocks surrounding the beach create shade by mid-afternoon. Early morning is the ideal time to visit this almost deserted beach with its colors accentuated in the right sunlight.
PROVATAS
Partially equipped beach | free / fine sand / beach bar
This golden beach is a quiet bay further west of Firiplaka, frequented by a few people, quiet, with fine sand and calm waters, surrounded by beautiful cliffs. The coast on which it is located is all alternating rocky and sandy bays that are very picturesque, and it is worth a short tour to admire the changing views. Provatas is a suitable beach for the last hours of the afternoon sun.
ARCHIVADOLIMNI
partially equipped beach | free / fine sand / no services
An expanse of thin, white beach, far from any city center and near a few remote hotels, it has a few umbrellas, almost hidden access, and beautiful waters. However, its northern exposure makes it really windy and mostly inaccessible when the winds blow hard on the island.
